Yellow Chair Series
The Yellow Chair Series is a longitudinal ethnography that documents the lives of the Katrina Generation of New Orleanians, all aged between 6 and 11 when Katrina struck New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. What began in 2020 as a farewell portrait project before I moved to Alaska has evolved into a long-term study of memory, belonging, and identity among young adults who grew up in the shadow of the storm.
Each portrait centers on the same yellow chair; originally in the shared space of my backyard, it has been moved to places that hold personal meaning: homes, street corners, parks, and neighborhoods in New Orleans that shaped their lives. Paired with interviews and ongoing conversations, these portraits create a living archive of a generation navigating personhood with Katrina as a major life anchor.
